Breaking the Silence
Women face unique health challenges that often disrupt their careers and lives—menopause, endometriosis, and fertility treatments among them. These issues are further complicated by societal stigma and a lack of understanding, especially for women in marginalized communities.
At Women’s Health at Work – Closing the Gender Gap, an event hosted by The Globe and Mail on November 6th, leaders tackled these challenges head-on. Janet Ko, Co-founder of the Menopause Foundation of Canada, shared how perimenopause symptoms derailed her career—a story echoed by many women.
The numbers are staggering: untreated menopause symptoms cost the Canadian economy $3.5 billion every year. This results is lost productivity, missed days of work and women in their peak earning years reducing their hours, taking lesser roles or leaving the workforce. The panelists called for better education, workplace flexibility, and improved benefits plans to help women thrive at work.
Despite lingering misconceptions about women’s health, experts like Dr. Yolanda Kirkham are hopeful. “We must speak up, challenge myths, and create meaningful change,” she said. By normalizing conversations and offering real solutions, workplaces can help women succeed.
The Menopause Foundation of Canada is working for a future where no woman is left in the dark about her health.
