Statement on Menopause Read in Canada’s House of Commons
On November 21, 2025, the House of Commons marked a significant milestone for women’s health advocacy. For the first time, a statement on menopause was delivered on the floor of Canada’s national legislature—an important step in elevating an issue that affects millions of women across the country.
The Honourable Mona Fortier, MP for Ottawa—Vanier—Gloucester, Ontario, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, used her statement to draw attention to World Menopause Month and to the persistent lack of understanding and support surrounding menopause. She noted that too many women struggle without realizing their symptoms are connected to menopause.
Fortier highlighted data from the Menopause Foundation of Canada showing that unmanaged menopause symptoms cost the Canadian economy an estimated $3.5 billion each year. With women aged 45 to 55 now the fastest-growing segment of the female workforce, she underscored that supporting them is not only the right thing to do—it is vital to strengthening families, workplaces, communities, and Canada’s economic future.
Her message was one of momentum and progress: “Let us keep up the momentum from October. Let us break the silence so that menopause is no longer minimized or misunderstood, but instead addressed with the education, support and respect women deserve.”
