Ontario Health Releases New Menopause Quality Standard

Ontario Health has released a new Menopause Quality Standard to help ensure that people experiencing perimenopause and menopause receive consistent, evidence-based, and person-centred care.

The new standard provides clear guidance on what appropriate menopause care should look like, based on the best available evidence and expert consensus. It outlines key expectations for healthcare providers and offers support for patients navigating this important stage of life.

Developed by Ontario Health with input from clinicians, researchers, and patient representatives, the Menopause Quality Standard is designed to strengthen conversations between patients and providers, improve treatment decisions, and create clearer pathways to care.

Janet Ko, President and Co-founder of the Menopause Foundation of Canada (MFC), served on the advisory committee that helped shape the standard, providing the patient perspective. The committee was co-chaired by Dr. Michelle Jacobson, a member of MFC’s Medical Advisory Board, and Dr. Illiana Lega, both recognized leaders in women’s health.

“For too long, women have struggled to get the care they need at menopause. This new standard is an important step in closing the care gap — setting clear expectations for providers and empowering patients to ask for the care they deserve,” said Janet Ko, President and Co-founder of the Menopause Foundation of Canada.

Standardizing menopause care across Ontario will help improve health outcomes, reduce unnecessary tests and referrals, and minimize variation in treatment. It also supports stronger continuity of care and enhances the patient–provider relationship at a pivotal stage of life.

The release of this quality standard marks meaningful progress toward improving menopause care for women and all people in midlife.
